About Us
Shannon Hong is a junior at Herricks High School. She has a strong passion for science research, birds, and reading. She found her passion in fighting for the freedom of knowledge when she noticed that books and school subjects began to be challenged in communities around her, meaning that students had to actively seek out books and certain subjects instead of being able to access these resources easily from their schools. She wishes that one day, all knowledge can be easily accessible to anyone who wants to learn.

Chloe Guo is a junior at Herricks High School. She has a passion for working with younger children, spending the majority of extracurriculars and community service doing what she loves- whether as a camp counselor, teacher assistant, after-school mentor or simply as a big sister. Through her experiences she has been exposed to the unjust censorship of education in the United States; book banning, which mainly targets children’s literature, is the most widespread form. This issue is taken as far as specific books that address social issues that include race, gender identity, and sexuality to be regarded as “potentially dangerous”. She believes that all youth should be free to access any and all topics they wish in education especially if it means educating themselves on the realities of our society today. The strive for learning should not be capped or filtered for anyone.

About Us
Enya Sakhrani is a junior at Herricks High School. Her favorite things include science, animals, language, and playing music. When Enya first found out that students had limited access to knowledge, such as banned books and students not being taught the full story in schools, it outraged her She believes that no matter the cultural background or financial situation, students should be allowed to read to their heart's content. Moreover, she thinks students interested in research shouldn't have to restrict their thirst for knowledge because of the fees placed on many research journals. Her mission, along with Unsilenced Scholars, hopes to allow children from across the world the freedom to learn, no matter the topic.

Sabrina Zhang is a junior at Herricks High School. When Sabrina found herself growing interested in the social issues of the world, this would mark the first spark of ambition that ignited and would grow, as she matured throughout the years. Growing up meant that one would begin to recognize the flaws and issues that should be addressed in society; People of color would have to face racism that still lingered around. In an effort to combat discrimination, people of color would raise their voices, often writing books about realistic experiences that any person of color could face. However, these very same books are being labeled as "controversial," and would then be banned. Displeased with this blatant censorship, Sabrina seeks to make sure that books containing such topics will not be restricted, and that people of color will continue to raise their voices about their experiences.

Anderson Wang is a Junior at Herricks High School. His strong points are in the arts such as music and drawing. He has seen throughout the years how social freedom and equality have been challenged in the real world as these topics have also been on major headlines and have been especially prevalent during and post the COVID years. One of the biggest problems with equality this year and late 2022 was academic freedom and the inability to provide equal access to the same classes and educational media such as books. When reading The Great Gatsby, he was immersed in the story of unrequited love between Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan who was a married woman. As he looked for more of F. Fitzgerald's great pieces, The Great Gatsby turned out to be a banned book in a few states due to problems similar to another banned book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. This further intrigued him into diving deeper into the controversial and subjective reasoning to banning books.
